One fine day me and my friend decided to go on weekend trip/tour(2 day trip) to Mysore. Our plan was to start Saturday morning from Bangalore and return back to Bangalore by Sunday evening. I have prepared a plan accordingly covering the important and famous temples in and around Mysore.
Important and famous places visited near Mysore : Sri Chaluvanarayana swamy temple(melkote), Yoga Narasimhaswamy temple(melkote) , Chamundi hills(mysore), Chamundeshwari temple(mysore), Sri ranganathaswamy temple(srirangapatna). Below you can see the tour map details
Day one
We started at around 7 am and went to bus stand from where we will get buses to Mandya. There are no. of buses from Bengaluru to mandya. Distance between bangalore and mandya is around 100 km. We thought we can reach mandya in 2.5 hours, but because of huge traffic it has taken around 5.5 hours to reach mandya.
We reached mandya by around 1.30 pm, we had our lunch and went to bus stop from where we can get buses to Melkote. Distance from mandya to Melkote is 40km. We reached Melkote by around 4.30 pm. Then we first went to Chaluvanarayana swamy temple
Chaluvanarayana swamy temple (Lord Vishnu) , Melkote Karnataka
History/story/legend : Chaluvanarayana swamy temple is one of the most important temple of lord Vishnu. Legend of this temple dates back to Kruthayuga. Shri chaluvanarayanaswamy was worshipped in kruthayuga by lord(God) Dattatreya.
In tretayuga it was worshiped by Lord shri Rama and in dwaparayuga it was worshiped by lord shri Krishna and Balarama. Saint Shri ramanujacharya stayed in this temple for 12 years. Below you can see the image of Cheluvanarayanaswamy temple .
Cheluvanarayana swamy temple timings : 7.30 am to 1pm , 4pm to 6pm , 7pm to 8pm
From Melkote bus stop we started walking towards Cheluvanarayana swamy temple. Temple of chaluvanarayana swamy was very big and architecture of the temple is very beautiful. Crowd in the temple was less, so we got darshan of chaluvanarayanaswamy in very less time.
After the darshan of the lord we sat in the temple looking at the architecture and enjoying the peaceful environment. Then we came out of the temple and started towards Yoga Narashima swamy temple . In between we have stopped at koneru (pond built by stones). Seeing the Koneru makes us feel that we are in ancient India. Then we went to Yoga Narasimhaswamy temple. Distance between chaluvanarayanaswamy temple and yoga narasimhaswamy temple is around 1 km.
Yoga Narasimha swamy temple, Melkote
History/story/legend : Idol(statue) of Lord Narasimhaswamy in this temple will be in a seated position with yoga patta. This temple is considered as one of the seven main temples devoted to the worship of lord Narasimha. The diety of Narasimha in this temple was installed by prahalada ( great devote of lord Vishnu, for whom lord Vishnu came in the form of Narasimha avatar). Below you can see the image/picture of yoga Narasimha swamy temple
Yoga Narasimhaswamy temple timings : 9.30 am to 1.30 pm , 5.30 pm to 8 pm
Temple will be on the hill and we have to climb around 300 steps to reach the temple. We have started climbing the steps in hurry and got tired after climbing 200 steps. So I request you to climb slowly. Then we had the darshan of lord narasimha and felt blessed. Temple surroundings are very peaceful .From the top of the hill you can have a clear view of near by places.
Then we went back to bus stop at around 7.15 pm. At that time there were no buses, so we have taken a shared auto and went to jakkanahalli cross, from where we can get buses to Mysore. Jakkanahalli is 7 km from Melkote. From Jekkanahalli we have traveled in a private bus and reached mysore city at around 9pm. Distance from Melkote to mysore is 56 km .
We have taken a room in a hotel which is near by bus stop. We have got fresh and went outside to have dinner. With this we have completed first day of our tour.
Day two
Next day we have started at around 7 am in the morning and went to bus stop from where we will get buses to Sri Chamundeshwari temple. We got a bus to chamundeshwari temple at around 8 am. Distance between mysore bus stand and chamundi hills is 12 km. It has taken 40 min for us to reach Chamundeswari temple.
While traveling in bus we can enjoy the scenery of chamundi hills, which are fully covered by greenery. The actual beauty of mysore is in chamundi hills and I can say chamundi hills are one of the best attractions of Mysore. There is also a walk way/trekking path (1000 steps) to climb the hills.
Chamundeshwari temple, Mysore, karnataka
History/legend/story : Maa Parvathi incarnated as Chamundeshwari devi to kill the demon mahishasura. Maa Chamundeshwari fought with mahishasura and his army for nine continuous days, slaying the demon army and mahishasura at the top of the hill.
After killing mahishasura, Maa chamundeshwari resided on the top of the hill to bless the devotees. Darshan of Maa chamundeshwari will remove the evil forces in us and help us in achieving success. Below you can see the image/picture of chamundeshwari temple
There was a huge crowd in the temple and the queue line came out of the temple. We stood in the line and it has taken around 2 hours to get the darshan of mata chamundeshwari. Even though the crowd was heavy, with the blessings of goddess chamundeshwari we got a very good darshan. Jai Mata di
Sri Chamundeshwari temple timings : 7.30 am to 2 pm , 3.30 pm to 6 pm , 7.30 to 9 pm
After having the darshan we started back to mysore bus stop. There is also old and famous Mahabaleshwara (lord Shiva) temple which is in walk able distance (200 meters) from sri chamundeshwari temple. please do visit it as well.
Actually we are supposed to visit mysore palace but as we have to go back to Bangalore we have skipped it. We went back to hotel by around 12 noon, quickly packed our bags and took a bus to go to srirangapatnam. Distance from mysore to Srirangapatnam is 20 km.
After getting down in srirangapatnam we took an auto and directly went to sriranganathaswamy temple. By the time we reached the temple it was around 1 pm.
Sriranganatha swamy temple srirangapatnam
History/legend/story : Once river cauveri performed tapasya to lord Vishnu in this place, pleased with her penance lord Vishnu gave darshan to cauveri and granted three boons.
- Cauveri will become more sacred
- Place where she performed penance (srirangapatnam) will become pilgrimage
- He will reside there as ranganatha to bless the devotees
The lord brahma, lord shiva, along with all the gods came here and worshipped lord Ranganatha and mata Laxmi. Great rishi gowthama along with many other great rishi’s worshipped ranganathaswamy in this temple. Below you can see the image/picture of sriranganathaswamy temple
Sriranganathaswamy temple timings : 7 am to 1.30 pm , 4 pm to 8 pm
In this temple also crowd was heavy and queue line came out of the temple. We also joined the queue line at around 1pm. Actually temple is supposed to close at 1.30pm but they have allowed all the people who are in queue line by 1.30 pm. Since it was afternoon and summer, the road was like a hot pan.
Standing in the queue line with out chappal is really a great experience. This experience made me remember the quote that “it’s not easy to get the darshan of God”. Outside the temple you can purchase tulasi mala for lord shri Ranganatha. After spending around 1-1.5 hours in queue line finally we got darshan of lord shri ranganatha.
I can say that two eyes will not be enough to see the lord. Lord Vishnu will be on adishehsa in yoga nidra with mata laxmi at his feet. We gave tulasi mala to priest, who offered it at the lord’s feet. The immediate devote after us was performing some special Pooja so we got a chance to stay infront of the lord ranganathaa for around 5-10 min. Seeing lord shri ranganatha for 5-10 min made me feel as if I was in Vykuntam seeing lord Vishnu along with mata Laxmi.
After darshan we had lunch at around 3.00 pm and started back to Bangalore.
There is nimishamba temple (maa parvati which is only 2 km from sri ranganadaswamy temple. We were unable to visit nimishamba temple because of time factor
With this we have completed our Melkote, mysore and srirangapatnam visit.
