Moksha Sanyasa Yoga - Shrimad Bhagavad Gita eighteenth Chapter

Shrimad Bhagavad Gita eighteenth Chapter – Moksha Sanyasa Yoga

Arjuna: hey Krishna I want to know about sanyasa, can you kindly tell me”

Bhagawan shri krishna: Sanyasa means giving up kamya karmas (works which are done to fulfill a desire). And not doing bad karmas. At the same time one should not stop doing niyatha karmas (like eating, drinking water etc), yagna, dhana and tapasya. But this karmas should be done by giving away the karma pahala.

It is impossible for a person to give up all the karmas. A person who give up the karma phala is the real sanyasi.

Karma pahala will be of three types – good, bad and both good+bad. If a person doesn’t give up the karma pahala, he will get his karma phala after death. A sanyasi will not get this karma pahalas.

A karma which is done without attachment, without expecting anything, without affection and enmity is called satvik karma.

A karma which is done with a desire, hardwork and attitude is called rajosik karma.

A karma which is done with moha (illusion), which can tie you with bandas, which can create destruction and violence is thamasik

A person who doesn’t have attachment, attitude, who has strong will power, who will not be disturbed by win/loss is Satvik

A person who has attachment, who do work with a desire, who is not pure, who will be disturbed by win/loss is called Rajosik.

A person who doesn’t have any self-control, who is cunning, who is lazy, who will be always in a kind of depression and keeps postponing the work is thamasik

Buddi (wisdom/decision power) which cannot differentiate between dharma & adharma, good & bad work is rajosik guna

With ignorance considering adharma as dharma and extreme thinking is thamo guna.

Controlling manas, prana (life force), indriyas with yoga is satvik guna.

Continuously working for desires is rajosik druthi (determination)

Continuously being in fear, sadness, sexual desire and not willing to come out of them is called thamasik druthi (determination)

Any experience which initially makes you suffer and which later gives you comfort and peaceful mind is satvik

Experiences of indriyas (skin, eyes, nose, ears, tongue…) which will initially make you happy but make you suffer later is rajosik.

Being in illusion with extra sleep, laziness and ignorance from starting to ending is thamasik

Gita Abhyas – Best book to keep Bhagavad Gita in practice

By getting manas in control, by not getting attracted to anything and by giving up all the desires and taking sanayas will take you to best position.

A person who has made his manas pure, who has given up all the desires, who has no enmity or affection, who stays in a lonely place, who takes limited food, who has controlled his manas, who is always in dyana yoga and viragya and who keeps worshipping me will reach me.

Arjuna I am telling once again, keep your manas in me, give up the karma pahala, worship me and follow what I have said, you will reach me for sure.

Arjuna have you listened to my words carefully? Has your Agyanam (illusion or not having actual knowledge) gone?

Arjuna: Krishna with your blessings and words, my moha was gone, my doubts got cleared, and I got actual knowledge. I will do what you say

Sanjaya (who got a boon from vedavyas to see the kurukshetra war from any place) said to Drutharastra (kauravas father) “in this way the conversation between shri Krishna and Arjuna has happened. With the blessings of Vedavyas, I was able to listen to their conversation. Wealth, greatness, success, and dharma – this things will be there for sure in a place where shri Krishna and Arjuna are there.

Shrimad Bhagavad Gita seventeenth Chaper – Shraddhatraya Vibhaaga Yoga

Arjuna: Hey krishna if someone don’t follow Shastra vidhi (way as told in vedic literature) and worship you with devotion as per their wish, then those people will be satvik, rajosik or thamasik?

Bhagawan shri Krishna: Human based on the body they get (as per the karma) will be satvik, rajosik and thamasik. Humans way of thinking will be based on this three gunas. People who are satva guna will worship gods, people who are in rajoguna will worship yaksha and rakshasas. People who are in thamoguna will worship spirits and devils.

People who worship me in a way which is not as per Shastra by harming themselves, to get their wishes come true, are people who have aasurik gunas.

Gita Abhyas – Best book to keep Bhagavad gita in Practice

Three types of food will be liked by humans. Food which will increase the life span, which will give energy, which are not dry, which are sticky (example ghee), healthy will be liked by people who are satvik. This kind of food will keep the person pleasant and happy.

Foods which are extreme bitter, sour, salty, hot, cold, spicy, dry, which will create more thirstiness will be liked by people who are rajosik. This kind of food will cause disease and suffering.

Food which is cooked 3-4 hours back, which have lost its taste, which is spoiled, which is smelling bad, which is tasted by others, which is not clean will be liked by people who are thamasik

Also read 21 best quotes of Chanakya

Doing yagna and worship as per Shastra without expecting anything is satvik.

Doing yagna or worship expecting something is rajosik

Yagna or worship which is done not considering Shastra and without devotion is considered as thamasik.

Shraddhatraya Vibhaaga Yoga bhagavad gita
Shraddhatraya Vibhaaga Yoga bhagavad gita

Worshipping gods, brahman’s (hear brahman means good people who are great devotees of god, it doesn’t have anything to do with caste), being pure, practicing brahmacharya, ahimsa and doing good things are considered as sharirika thapasya (thapasya done by body)

Talking truth, talking good and not hurting others by words is considered as Vak thapasya (thapasya done by voice)

Having pleasant manas, being good, being silent, self-control, having pure (good) thoughts is considered as manasik thapasya ( thapasya done by manas)

Above mentioned thapasyas, if done without expecting anything then it is considered as satvika thapasya

If thapasya is done for a desire or to showoff then it will be rajosik thapasya.

If it is done without understanding and by harming self and others then it is call thamasik.

Donation which is done as karthavya (duty) without expecting anything to a person in need is satvik

Donation which is done expecting something or given unwillingly (not by complete heart) is considered as rajosik

Donation given to a wrong person or a donation given by disrespecting the donation taker is considered thamasik

People who do tapasya, yagna, dhana (donation) without expecting anything will get moksha.

Arjuna rememeber yagna, thapasya, dhana and any other work done without shraddha ( concentration and selflessness) will not help the person in both  iham ( in the present life) and param (after life).

Purushottama Yoga - Shrimad Bhagavad Gita fifteenth Chapter

Shrimad Bhagavad Gita fifteenth Chapter – Purushottama Yoga

Bhagawan shri Krishna: Arjuna this universe is like inverted tree having roots in the upward direction and stems growing towards downward direction. This stems which are downwards represent the kamya karmas (works done to get something especially worldly things) of human world. This tree is called Ashwatha vruksham (samsara vruksham)

The more you get involved in the kamya karmas, the stems will grow and you will move away from roots. So one should find the roots and its starting point, by using non attachment as tool.

Gita Abhyas – Best book to know how to practice Bhagavad Gita

Jiva (soul) will carry his experiences (or karmas) from one body to another. In this way jiva will be leaving a body (death) to get a new body (birth). In this new body he will again get manas, ears, tongue, nose, eyes, and skin. With them he will again start experiencing the world and keep doing karmas.

Normal people can’t understand how a jiva (soul) will leave the body and based on karma which body he is going to take. But people having jnana chakshu (divine eyes- rishis and great people will get this power because of their tapasya) can know it.

Sun who is giving light and heat to the universe, is getting energy from me. In the same way moon is also getting energy from me. All the planets are in their place and rotating properly because of my energy.

Purushottama Yoga Bhagavad Gita
Purushottama Yoga Bhagavad Gita

Jivas (souls) can be divided into two

1.Kshara (souls which are in a physical body and which keeps changing the body – like souls in human , animals etc)

2.Akshara (souls in spiritual world , where the body will not change and will not undergo any physical change)

And there is paramatma who is taking care of Kshara, Akshara and all the universes. Since I am different from kshara and Akshara, Vedas call me as Purushottama.

Gunatraya vibhaaga yoga - Bhagavad Gita Fourteenth Chapter

Shrimad Bhagavad Gita Fourteenth Chapter – Gunatraya vibhaaga yoga

Bhagawan shri Krishna: Arjuna I will tell you about the knowledge, with which many rishis are getting moksha

Prakruthi (nature) is made up of three gunas- satva, rajo and thamo guna. This 3 gunas will be binding the atma (soul) to a body.

Since satva guna is pleasant it will make a person enlightened , healthy, getting attached to world peace and make you interested in actual knowledge. It will make you satisfied and bind you slightly only to these things.

Gita Abhyas – Best book to keep Bhagavad Gita in Practice

Rajo guna will arise desire in you. So if rajo guna is there, it will make the person to do a lot of karmas to get worldly things/pleasures. And because of this karmas you will be bonded.

Thamo guna will make the person to be in moha (illusion) and make the person lazy, carelessness and sleepy. Because of this things person will be bonded.

Satva guna will make a person happy and peaceful. Rajo guna will make a person to do more work for things which are not permanent and bring ashanthi (not being peaceful)

Thamo guna will make a person to do bad and will bring danger.

Gunatraya vibhaaga yoga bhagavad gita
Gunatraya vibhaaga yoga bhagavad gita

If a person dies when he is in satva guna he will reach higher worlds (like Swarga (heaven)). If a person dies when he is in Rajo guna he will be born again as human. If a person dies when he is in thamoguna he will be born either as human who will face lot of issues or as animal or tree etc.

Also read how to Achieve success the Bhagirada way

A person who understands and experiences that all three gunas are of prakruthi and he is atma (soul) and different from it(prakruthi), will reach me and will not be born again.

Arjuna: what are the characteristics of a person who will grow above all the three gunas? And how he will grow above all the three gunas?

Shir Krishna: A person who has grown above all the three gunas will understand that gunas are prakruthi. So he will be stable and see happiness& sadness, soil & gold, enemy & friend as same. He will give up all the karmas.

If a person have bhakthi towards me and who always think about me can easily grow above the three gunas

Also read importance of reading Ramayana

Bhagawan shri Krishna: people who keep their whole concentration on me and worship me with complete devotion are best, in whatever form (saguna or nirguna) they worship. For the people who worship me as nirguna rupa, it will be very difficult to control manas. Reaching me by worshipping in nirguna rupa is difficult.

Gita Abhyas – Best Book to keep Bhagavad gita in Practice

Arjuna keep your manas and buddi in me, then for sure you will reach me. If you can’t keep your manas and buddi constantly in me, then try to reach me by abyasa yoga (like doing japa, tapasya….). If you can’t do abyasa yoga, involve yourself in the karmas belonging to me (like doing good working in the name of god, or doing Pooja or works related to temples etc). If you are so weak that you can’t do karma’s belonging to me, then do sharanagathi (completely surrendering) to me and offer the karma which you do for yourself and give up the karma phala. By sacrificing the karma phala, you will get peace.

Vishwaroopa Pradarshna Yoga - Shrimad Bhagavad Gita Eleventh chapter

Shrimad Bhagavad Gita  Eleventh Chapter – Vishwaroopa pradarshana yoga

Arjuna: Krishna all my moha (unwanted desire or illusion) was gone, with the knowledge you have shared with me. I am willing to see your vishwaroopa. If you think I am eligible for it, kindly show me your vishwaroopa

Bhagawan shri Krishna: With your normal vision you will not be able to see my vishwaroopa. I will give you divine vision, see my vishwaroopa

Then Bhagawan shri Krishna has shown his vishwaroopa to Arjuna.

Arjuna witnessed Krishna with unlimited number of eyes, jewelry, weapons… Arjuna was able to see the entire universe in Krishna. Bhagawan Krishna was glowing with an energy which is equal to 1000 sun’s put together.

Then Arjuna bowed down before Krishna and told

Arjuna: Hey bhagawan, in your vishwaroopa I am able to see all gods, all the living beings, lord brahma, lord Shiva. You have unlimited no. of hands, faces, eyes. There is no start and end to you. I am afraid to see you with unlimited shoulders, hands, faces, legs. Your face is glowing like fire. I am unable to see you like this.

I can see all the kauravas, bhishma, drone, karna and many other people entering your mouth which is glowing like fire. Some people’s head are getting stuck between your teeth.

Hey paramathma, please come back to your shantharoopa (peaceful form). I am unable to understand you (aggressive form which Arjun has seen). Please tell me who are you.

Bhagawan Krishna: I am mahakal (form of shiva), my work is to destroy. Even if you stop doing the war, all this people are going to die. So Arjuna get up and do the war. You will get the credit. Kill the people, who are already killed by me.

Raja Yoga - Shrimad Bhagavad Gita Ninth Chapter

Shrimad Bhagavad Gita Ninth Chapter -Raja Guhya Raja Vidya Yoga (Raja Yoga)

Bhagawan shri Krishna: Arjun I will teach you the ancient knowledge which is best and easy to follow. I am there in all the places. When I take a human form most of the people will not be able to  understand my greatness and they will neglect me.

For all the universes I am the father and mother. I am the one who gives karma phala. I am the one whom you are supposed to know. I will take care of the person who keep thinking of me without any wish.

People who worship God’s (here gods means gods like sun, Indra…. not Vishnu or Shiva) will reach gods, people who worship pithrudevatha (forefathers in the form of gods) will reach them and people who worship me will reach me.

I will accept things (leaf, flower, fruit, water..) from people, only if it is given with complete devotion. Arjun what all you eat, what all good you do, what all donation you do, what all tapasya you do, like this offer everything to me.

In this way if you do things with sanyasi buddi and offer me everything, you will not be bound by Karma. So you will be freed from all the bonds of Karma and you will reach me.

Jnana Vignana Yoga - Shrimad Bhagavad Gita Seventh Chapter

Shrimad Bhagavad Gita seventh chapter – Jnana Vignanan Yoga

Bhagawan shri Krishna: I will tell you about the knowledge, after knowing which there is no need to know anything else .

Out of 1000’s of people there will be 1 who will be trying to get moksha. Out of those people who are trying to get moksha, there will be very few people who will understand me as I am.

One nature (form) of mine is divided into 8 – earth, water, fire, air, sky, manas (thinking power/ brain), buddhi (wisdom of differentiating bad & good and choosing to do good things), ahankar (attitude)

There is one more nature (form) which is greater and different than previous nature (form). It is the soul.

All the living beings are born because of this 2 natures. I am responsible for creation and destruction of nature. There is nothing greater than me.

Jnana Vignana Yoga Bhagavad Gita
Jnana Vignana Yoga Bhagavad Gita

Arjuna, I am the light in moon & sun, I am the omkar in Vedas, I am the heat in fire, I am the life in all the human beings.

All the thamasik, rajas and satvik thoughts will come because of me. But remember I am not in them. These thought create illusion (Maya) because of which the entire world (living beings) will not be able to recognize me, who is different and beyond this illusion. It’s almost impossible to come out of this Maya (illusion). But people who believe and worship me can come out of this Maya.

After many janmas (life’s) human will get jnana (actual knowledge), that I am everything and starts worshiping me. This kind of people are very less.

Since I will be covered by yoga Maya all can’t see me. World (people) can’t understand that I am the one who doesn’t have start and end.

I know people of past, present and future. But no one knows about me.

People who understand me, will keep their manas in control and keep remembering me every movement.

Atma Yoga - Shrimad bhagavad Gita sixth chapter

Shirmad Bhagavad Gita Sixth chapter – Atma Yoga

Bhagavan shri Krishna: karma sanyasi is the one who do the karma (duty) without any expectations or karmaphala (result). One who can’t give up his expectations and wishes can never become a yogi.

One should improve himself. A controlled mind (manas) is like a friend and uncontrolled mind is like an enemy.  (Below are the steps given by bhagavan shri Krishna to control mind)

One should place a cloth or a mat in a neat place and should sit on it. Then he should first relax. He should sit in such a way that his neck, head and backbone should be straight. Then he should look at the tip of the nose and then he should meditate on me (god).

A person who eats more or less, who works more or less, who sleep more or less can’t practice dhyanam (meditation).

One should control his thoughts by meditation and should keep his manas in athma.

When manas (thoughts) which is not constant moves here and there we should get it back to our athma.

The person who is able to find me in all human beings and all human beings in me is always close to me.

Arjuna: Krishna I think it’s difficult to practice athma yoga with this manas which is not constant.

Mind is very fickle. As it is very difficult to control a strong wind in the same way it is very difficult to control manas.

atma yoga bhagavad gita
atma yoga bhagavad gita

Shri Krishna: There is no doubt in this. It is very difficult to control manas. But with practice, vairagya and self -discipline it is possible to control manas.

Arjuna: Krishna what will happen to a person who try to achieve this but unable to achieve and to a person who   achieved it and unable to stay in that stage. Will he be deprived of the both enjoyments in this world and the yoga as well?

Bhagawan shri Krishna: Arjuna nothing goes wrong for a person who tries to do good.

A person who tried but unable to achieve yoga will go to punyalokas (better world) stay there for many years and then will be born again as a human to very good parents and in good family. Then he will get back the knowledge which he has achieved in previous life. He will start his journey towards yoga from the point where he has stopped earlier.

Of all the yogis person who fill his manas with me, is the best

Sanyasa Yoga - Bhagavad Gita Fifth Chapter

Bhagavad Gita fifth chapter – Sanyasa Yoga

Arjuna: Krishna once you are saying that giving up karma is good and on the other side you are saying karma yoga (doing work without expectations) is good. Please let me know which is the best in both

Bhagavan Shri Krishna: Karma sanyasa (giving up), karma yoga both will take you to the same place. But in this both,  karma yoga is better than karma sanyasa.

One who does not hate, who does not have desire is the nitya sanyasi (perfect/continuous sanyasi). only fools will say that sankya yoga and karma yoga are different. If one is practiced perfectly result of both will be achieved (received)

A yogi who has got the true knowledge will consider that breathing, smelling, seeing etc are done by indriyas (sense organs) but not by him.

Great people will consider an educated person, an uneducated person, cow, elephant etc. as equal.

A yogi should not think about happiness which has start and end.(which are not ever lasting)

A rishi who’s soul is without impurities, who has control over his thoughts and who pray for the good of all will reach Brahma Nirvana stage.

Jnana Yoga - Shrimad Bhagavad Gita fourth Chapter

Shrimad Bhagavad Gita fourth chapter – Jnana Yoga

Bhagavan Shri Krishna: I have earlier told this karma yoga to sun god, from sun god this knowledge of karma yoga was learned by many. But with time, the knowledge of karma yoga was forgotten. So I am telling that sanatana (very old and precious) yoga to you.

Arjuna: Sun god is millions of years elder than you how is it possible that you have taught him karma yoga?

Shri Krishna : you and me have already spent many janmas (life’s). But I remember all those janmas but you don’t remember it.

Arjuna! Whenever there is a problem to dharma and when adharma becomes more, to protect the good people, to eradicate the bad people and to establish dharma, I will be born in every yuga. Who all understands the meaning of my janmas (life) and karmas(works) will not born again(will get moksha). Many great people who gave away affection, fear, anger and kept meditating about me has reached me because of jnana tapasya.

jnana yoga bhagavad gita
jnana yoga bhagavad gita

Arjuna I will be blessing people in the form they pray me. One who doesn’t keep attachment with karma phala (result) who is always satisfied, who is not dependent on anything and keeps doing the duty is considered as a person who has not done any karma. Controlling the indriyas, prana and understanding brahma tatva (oneness or actual knowledge) is like doing yagna.

Arjuna how fire can burn wood into ashes, in the same way jnana can burn all karmas. One who doesn’t have jnana, concentration and who is always confused will be destroyed. A confused person will not have peace in this life and even after life. One should come out of the confusion with Jnana (actual knowledge).

So Arjuna remove the confusion which is born from ignorance with help of Jnana.

Karma Yoga - Shrimad Bhagavad Gita Third Chapter

Shrimad Bhagavad Gita Third chapter – Karma Yoga

Arjuna after listening to sankya yoga

Arjuna: Krishna don’t confuse me with your words , is it better to give up everything and live like a saint or is it good to do karma? Tell me clearly what is good to me

Bhagavan Shri Krishna: Gyana yoga( giving up and knowing the actual knowledge) is for sankyas(saints) and karma yoga should be followed by yogis. Do your karma(duty). It is better to do your duty than not doing. If karma is not done life journey will not go further.

Considering the good that is going to happen to the world, it is always better to do karma. So it is better for you to do karma. Leave all your karma’s to me, put your chitta(consciousness) in atma(soul), leave desire, affection and do the war.

Who all perform karma as said above will get released from all the karma’s.

In everything (which can be seen, felt, heard……) there will be raga(affection) or dvesha(dislike or enemity). A karma yogi should not be bound by this. Ragadvesha are enemies to karma yogi.

karma yoga bhagavad gita
karma yoga bhagavad gita

Arjuna: Krishna why a human is doing papa( evil things) as if someone is forcing them to do? What is the reason and who is responsible for it?

Shri Krishna: Papa(evil) will be born from kamam(desire) , krodh(unnecessary anger) , rajogun(attitude of doing anything for a need). These are the enemies for every person in this world.

Kama(desire) will cover the knowledge of a person as dust covers a mirror. Kama cannot be satisfied. Kama will cover the gyana(knowledge) and with the help of indriyas(sense organs) will lead the person in to moha(illusion).

Indriyas are powerful, manas(thinking power/will….) is more powerful than indriyas, buddhi(power of differentiating good and bad) is more powerful than manas and atma(soul) is more powerful than buddhi. So with the help of atma(soul) control your indriyas and kill kama(desire).

Sankya Yoga -Shrimad Bhagavad Gita Second Chapter

Bhagavad Gita Second chapter – Sankya Yoga

Bhagawan Shri Krishna has seen Arjuna, who is crying

Bhagawan Krishna: A wise person is not supposed to think like this. Remove this weakness from your heart and stand up.

Arjuna: How can I fight with the respectable persons like Bhishma and Drona?  I am unable to understand what is dharma and what is adharma. I am your sishya ( student) so please teach me.

Bhagawan Krishna: You are thinking about the things which you are not supposed to think. A wise person will not think about the people whether alive or dead

How a person experiences balyam(child age), yavanam(teenage), vruddhapyam(old age). Changing of body also happens in the same way. Means after death, soul will take a new body. Soul cannot be destroyed by anyone.

sankya yoga bhagavad gita
sankya yoga bhagavad gita

Sensations which are caused by indriyas are the reason for happiness and sadness. One should bare them. So Arjuna get up and do the war. How a person changes his clothes when they become dirty, in the same way soul will change the body.

A person who is struck in the cage of luxuries will never get the gyan( real knowledge).

You have the right to do the karma, but you don’t have the right on the fruits of karma. Don’t become the reason for fruits of karma and at the same time don’t stop doing karmas. Be in a stable state and leave the attachment. See both the good and bad results in the same way.

Do your work but don’t get attachment with the work or result. Become sthithapragna by seeing everything as equal.

Arjuna: what are the qualities of sthithapragna?

Bhagawan Shri Krishna: one who will not be sad in bad times and who will not be excited by luxuries , one who has given up affections, fear, anger is called sthithapragna.

If someone think about things (good, bad or anything universe) then slowly it will develop relation. Because of relation kamam(desire) and then anger will be born.

Because of anger you will experience a kind of shock which leads to destruction of bhuddi (thinking power to differentiate good and bad) which leads to the complete destruction of the person.

One who will leave affection and enmity and keep his mind in control will enjoy the peace even though he is in disturbed world.

It starts with Drutharashtra(father of kauravas) asking  Sanjaya( who got a boon from Vedavyas to see kurukshetra war from any place) what pandavas and kauravas doing in kurukshetra(war field). Sanjaya starts explaining both armies. Everyone in the war field has blown their shank and are ready to start the war.

Then Arjuna asked lord Krishna to take the chariot in between the two armies so that he can view kaurava army. Lord Krishna has taken the chariot in between both the armies and stopped the chariot and asked Arjuna to look at Bhishma , Dronacharya and other important kings.

Then Arjuna saw his grandfather (Bhishma) , guru(Dronacharya),brothers , friends, sons(brother sons),relatives standing in kaurava army. Seeing all this people, Arjuna was struck by grief and started speaking to lord Krishna.

Arjuna : Hey Krishna after seeing my people Iam unable to think, my mouth is getting dried, I am unable to stand, my gandiva(bow) is slipping from my hand.

Keshava(lord Krishna) Iam unable to understand what good is going to happen by killing our own people.

Hey Krishna, I don’t want victory, I don’t want kingdom, I don’t want luxuries. There is no use in enjoying these things after killing our own people.

We have committed a big sin by getting ready to kill our own people for the sake of kingdom. I will leave my weapon, even if the kauravas kill me it will do good to me.

After saying all this Arjuna fell down in his seat and started crying. With this Arjuna  vishada yoga has been completed.
